Big Critical Mass Ride, and more...

Big Critical Mass Ride to Close Out Bike Month
Friday, June 27, 2008
One of the biggest ride and rolls of the year, and possibly the largest ever bike ride to hit the streets of Vancouver, the June Critical Mass Ride closes out this year's Bike Month.

Join fellow bicyclists, skaters, and bladers for this leisurely and spirited ride and roll through the streets of Vancouver. Meet at the Vancouver Art Gallery on the Georgia Street side between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. -- and roll and ride at 6:00 p.m. The ride is on rain or shine. Decorated bicycles, trailers, costumes, signs, flags, noisemakers, gettoblasters, sound systems, drums, and wildly modified bicycles are all highly encouraged.

After the ride is a BBQ starting at 8:00 p.m with an after party starting 9:00 p.m. at the ANZA Club, 3 West 8th at the Ontario Bike Route.

As lots of new and first time riders are expected at the ride, please help get the word out that the ride is a celebration where riders are respectful to all. As our portable sound systems are not big enough, help spread this word by printing out the following information and handing it out at the ride (or creating your own handout):
Pre-rides to Critical Mass:
  • UBC riders meet at the UBC Bike Hub, on the north east end of the Student Union Building, at 4:30 p.m. for a group ride to the Vancouver Art Gallery. Phone 604-822-BIKE for details.
  • East Van riders meet 4:00 p.m., leaving 4:30 p.m., from Grandview Park, 1200-block Commercial Drive, for a group ride to the Vancouver Art Gallery.
What's Critical Mass and how do I participate?

Celebrated around the world, Critical Mass is a grassroots reclamation of public space -- on the last Friday of the month -- which allows cyclists and other self-propelled people to move safely and comfortably through city streets in a car-free space. Non-polluting forms of transportation are promoted.

The ride sticks together for safety and fun. If you are at the front of the ride, stop if you are approaching a red light. But continue as a group if the lights change red while passing though an intersection. Avoid on coming traffic.

You will see participants peel off at the front to block motorized traffic from entering the mass. That's called "corking". Corkers keep the ride safe and allow the mass to pass though intersections where the lights have turned red. Thank them for corking!

If you're at the front, please don't speed ahead or take narrow roadways or paths. It stretches the ride out and makes life harder for corkers and other riders. If the mass has thinned out or has broken into more than one group, the front should wait at green lights for the group to "mass up".

The ride is a celebration (not a party). Take absolute responsibility for your actions and show motorists a better way to travel. A way which is more equitable, efficient, fun and socially responsible than the car. There's no need to be unfriendly or argue with motorists -- our sheer numbers tell the story. Look after each other, speak up, and ride with confidence.

Who decides where we go?

You do! Some rides have a destination that may be suggested at the start of the ride, but the route is always decided by the riders in the front. If you have an idea where the ride should go, move to the front and participate with others in a group decision. Remember to make it fun and interesting, and that Critical Mass has no leaders.

Critical Mask! Hallowe'ekend.

The most colourful ride of the year!
meet 5pm onwards, ride 6pm
from Vancouver Art Gallery Lions Side
free freedom for real
last October Friday, the 26th
Wear a costume in the street! Bike and Roll.
[ masks that obscure your vision are dangerous, wearing a helmet is a good idea, decorated helmets are superdoo - but don't put hard sharp objects on your helmet, duh...]

Celebrate the public space that we create by simply riding together. Inspire drivers and pedestrians with visions of a public city that is welcoming to all, safely, slowly... not ignoring the global or local environment.

pre- rides, 4:30ish ride together downtown:
  • UBC at the BikeHub in the SUB 827-7333
  • Grandview Park on Commercial drive
Please be respectful of all people on the ride, in cars, or on the street - we are riding to make a better city for all. Please always yield to pedestrians on foot. There will be some riders dressed up as police. Always remember that they are trying to do a job [a job which unfortunately tends to enforce the overwhelming presense of cars] but they are not in charge of the ride - may need to be taught how the ride works [respectfully] - and should not be doing the job of the riders: We need to be responsible for corking and for talking to wondering people on the side of the street. Non-CM participants frequently complain that they wish we could communicate better what is going on - it is up to all of us to do that. Maybe we don't really know all that is going on, but talking about it to spectators is the first step to making them participants! The Hallowe'en ride is always a ride of good spirits and fun with all the costumes.

BC Budget 2008 Consultation Deadline Friday 26th

The province is asking for input on the 2008 budget, which they say will be the "green budget". The have a $4.1 billion surplus so they should invest a lot in public transit and cycling. Carbon taxes, tolls on existing roads and bridges, and a freeze on new road construction would be great as well. And of course, twinning the Port Mann bridge and adding more lanes to Highway 1 is contrary to anything "green" as it would not reduce transportation congestion and would increase greenhouse gas emissions.

Please take a couple of minutes and fill out the on-line form at:

The Public Dreams Society is closing down Commercial Drive to all oil burnin, steel crushin traffic for the Parade of the Lost Souls!

Sign the Petition:
Better Transit, Not Freeways

If you care about living in one of the most livable cities in North America, now is the time to take action to keep it that way!

The Provincial Government's plan to expand Highway 1 and twin the Port Mann Bridge will result in more air pollution and more danger from increased traffic in neighbourhoods. It will fuel urban sprawl and erode our valuable farmlands. It will cost $2 billion or more and will not solve traffic congestion or lower greenhouse gas emissions. No city has ever built more car roads that ease congestion.

Take action now and sign the "Better Transit, Not Freeways" petition at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/882355425

-------------------------------------------------------

Port Mann & Highway 1 Expansion - Charge Up the Opposition

As you may know, although the provincial NDP has been raising some good questions regarding the Port Mann Bridge and Highway 1 expansion -- they have not taken a firm position against it, for fear of losing voters in Surrey. This stands in contrast to the strong position they took in
opposition to the proposed coal fired power plants in Princeton and Tumbler Ridge -- which they have raised repeatedly, and which seem to be in serious jeopardy now.

Given the increased awareness of climate change issues, there will be an internal debate within the NDP about whether or not to change their position on the Port Mann issue (i.e. To stand up in opposition to the twinning and highway expansion).

Please email your MLA (find contact info here:

http://www.leg.bc.ca/mla/3-1-1.htm), with a copy to transportation critic David Chudnovsky at david.chudnovsky.mla@leg.bc.ca , would be very helpful right now. Please send letters as soon as you're able. Just something simple is all that's needed -- expressing your opposition to the expansion and your wish that the NDP take a strong stand.

-------------------------------------------------------

On-line Petition Asking For Cycling Tax Incentives

An on-line petition has been created that calls for the Canadian Federal Government to create cycling related tax incentives. Please consider signing the petition and passing this on to your friends and other lists.

http://www.gopetition.com/online/10170.html

-------------------------------------------------------

Eco-rage and Idling Hot Line

There's an idling complaints hotline at 604-257-2404 where you can phone-in licence plate numbers of offenders. Better to make a quick phone call than suffer a coronary from Eco Rage! For issues regarding idling transit busses, in addition to the hotline you can call Translink at
604-953-3040 with your concerns.

In July, 2006, Vancouver City Council unanimously passed an anti-idling bylaw to cut air pollution. Drivers who leave a car running for more than three minutes face a $50 fine and the fine doubles to $100 for anyone caught leaving a car running. As of January, 2007, fines are to be imposed. The District of North Vancouver passed a bylaw against idling in 2000, but has yet to ticket anybody with a $45 fine. The City of North Vancouver has had the bylaw on its books for more than a year.

freedom on a bicycle

CRITICAL MASS RIDE AND ROLL FRIDAY,
august 31, last friday of the month
5:30pm, lions side - vancouver art gallery

themes to inspire you to dress up
(make the fun more visible if you like)
: summer of (velo)love
: garbage strike mass
: public works mass (bike do a lot for a city)
: virgo-vixen celebration
: whatever you bring!
THERE IS A MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE IDEA OF FREEDOM. the juvenile version broadcast everywhere from tv to bus-side billboard is a version of freedom in name only. when we define freedom as car driving and hyper mobility of the individual, all by her lonesome - then we enslave the rest of us to car-road expansion to infinity, to stalled traffic... even the driver: the slave to the stop and go, the driver must not waver or face ultimate punishment of death. there is a long line of cars, and it's all because of? the individual driver shirks the responsibility of caring and sharing in the mobility of those going the same way. this driver is enslaved on the wheel, not allowed to stop or breathe, the eyes cannot deviate. cell phones and other distractions like conversation are fatal... enslaved to paying forever for an overpriced impossible system.

A quicker way to your final destination

destination

it is the misunderstanding of freedom that pits each against all. an APOCALYPTIC STREET WAR FANTASY that does so well at the box office. the measure of success is community, not selfish fantasy. step out into true freedom, embrace the responsibility that comes from riding under your own power, of being open and visible to all, don't hide in a box.

All are invited to this CELEBRATION ON WHEELS. Join hundreds and hundreds of diverse and supportive people in conversation with the street space. Enjoy the safety and comfort of simply riding together. confront this conflict at the centre of our urban (majority) existence. dispel that apathetic sadness that threatens to consume us all as the rush (crawl) hours tick away. Yes, it is possible to have fun and be happy here, to reach out in consolation of the other: CRITICAL MASS!

city council is again considering the idea of improving BURRARD STREET BRIDGE cycling infrastructure. The details on the latest instalment of this 20 year project are at straight.com/article-106711/burrard-street-bridge-plans-up-for-debate So, take some time out to lobby your politician or media about this. The best solution is -of course- to take away car lanes, put in plants as barriers to protect pedestrians, and alter the bridge so cars are not always-indefinitely-forever the first priority.

Some thoughtful DISCUSSION from the list:
...some of the promotional materials and messages for vancouver's critical mass describe the event as a "party on wheels". i'd like to suggest that we instead promote critical mass as a "celebration on wheels" and be careful to avoid the word "party". the difference may seem subtle, but i think you may know where i'm going with this.

"party" will bring out partiers who see this as a direct invitation to drink and carryon as some do at parties -- some of the unwanted behaviour that's described in the sun newspaper letter and by others on this list.

"celebration," on the other hand, doesn't imply that (or at least not as directly) and is more in line with what i believe many would like critical mass to be...

June is Bike Month!

There are so many things going on. Hooray!
...and the website is broken and also I don't have time to keep up with it all as I am starting up a bike trailer making workshop so I can't be at the computer all day.

So your best bet to keep up with it all is the BEST bike month Calender, which tons of events listed, lots of detail, well updated.

There is also the Momentum Magazine Calender, some of which duplicates content.

The fearlessgearless drupal blog is shaping up to be a very well maintained and active hub of bike culture. Includes what you won't find as official bike month events. [though I still think fixies are bad for your knees] They have a phenomenal splash page currently.

All of this confusion is exactly why the Critical Mass and velolove website needs to be refashioned and organised so as we can keep things fresh and lively. Something very similar but a little more explicitly political than fearlessG and styled to be less cool and more inclusive. But we don't want to compete, we want to compliment. Unfortunately, it seems only Ryan, Ifny, Steve and I are into this velolove project at the moment - and all of us are too busy with our other lives to spare time for it right now, so that is on the backburner and the page isn't really being kept up.

Though I do wish we were more on the ball because there is some special things we need to make happen here.
  • Such as the important street reclaimation project of the car free commercial drive festival happening both Sunday June 17th, and Sunday July 22nd. They need your help now to make it happen.
  • Five Ring Circus screening and wonderful work less party stuff. A sequel is already in the works!
  • The Anti-Poverty Commitee keeps fighting the good fight but are getting slaughtered in the corporate media spin machine. The police are impersonating 24hour news reporters to muzzle them. This issue is important.
  • The world naked bike ride, indecent exposure to cars - This Saturday!
  • MCthree performance ride this friday the 8th.
  • You Never Bike Alone DVD and reviews and upcoming screenings?
  • Tuesday June 12th city hall is reviewing some bike lanes so you should speak up and support them.
  • Hey, right now is Bike to Work Week with the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition!
  • On the 28th, Thursday night, is the ever popular Bike Shorts film night, but this year at the Van East Cinema! Presented by Freegeek Vancouver.
  • And so very importantly, the June 29th Critical Massive is going to be H-U-G-E, finale for bike month. Last year there were 400 more than 3000 wheels. This year we may well get 3000 riders/skaters/whathaveyous. We are supposed to have some meetings to promote this ride and also to plan for it and plan some ways to keep such a ride sane with that size... Such as my keen idea of planning a route that goes on wide streets only and is led by parade float/4 wheel bike chariots etc. But I don't have the time to organise anything for that right now. Your best bet is to talk to people on velolove and get planning! We have lots of worried people to reassure. Also, I am going to make one float/love bike/ sound system thing to help lead the route to sensible street venues [single lane in just too small for thousands of bikes] and we need good corking instructions and ways of communicating the peaceful wisedom of experienced riders too the many new-comers that will show up.
So, that is it. I'm not writing any more, but you know I missed most of what is happening still. That is all I am posting for like 3 weeks, because that is all I can do. Even if it is the most active/important time for human power activists to be connecting. Follow the links, there is a lot there. Talk to people on velolove email list - or use other forums also. You can always post comments to this story with links to what else is needing mention. Or, if you have something valuable, email me, and I'll forward it or set you up to post on this blog yourself.

Take care and take the lane!

57 unnecessary (but fun) reasons to go out

...biking in the rain?...

* Tuesday April 17th: perhaps our strangest variety show, "57 Varieties",
celebrates a start to its 4th unplugged year by re-launching on a new date, the
third Tuesday evening of every month. Still at Spartacus Books, (319 W.
Hastings at Cambie). Will there be a bevy of special guests? Will Rowan bake
another birthday cake? You have to come out to know for sure.

* Wednesday April 18th: 8 pm the 3rd Wednesday of every month is ground zero
for a nostalgia bomb -- the '80s at 8 at the Cottage Bistro (4468 Main at
29th). Backtracking through the mire of the decade, we revisit 1988 in Doc
Brown's time machine.

** Also that night, Dianna David will be accompanying in her unique style
(which is to say, mime, freestyle dance, contact juggling) the Contemporary
Lovers Trio at the Railway Club (579 Dunsmuir at Seymour), 9 pm, $7. She's a
busy woman with a load of shows this month, so if you're intrigued, seek her
out for more.

* Saturday April 21st: the Guelph House is throwing a concert in honour of
their eviction; blocks away, at the Rhizome Cafe (317 E. Broadway), The Torch
-- an evening of cultural resistance to the 2010 Olympics -- will be underway
from 6:30 to 11:30 pm.

* Sunday, April 22nd, 2-3:30: Vancouver New Music presents the first of this
year's Soundwalks, a series of curated "active listening" urban hikes. Today's
will cover Stanley Park, meeting at the tennis courts by Beach Ave and Park
Lane. Mandatory RSVP at 604-633-0861!

* Sunday, April 29th, 2-3:30: Soundwalk again, this time through Mount
Pleasant. Gathers, again, at the tennis courts, this time near Prince Edward
and 8th.

** Later that night, the daytime people finally get a taste of Accordion Noir,
the late-night all-accordion radio show / podcast they've all been hearing so
much about. As part of the annual CO-OP membership drive, we'll be giving you
two hours of guest programming from 7 through 9 pm, holding to the theme of
squeezebox tunes in Latin American styles -- from cumbia and conjunto to tango,
hopefully with some special guests. 102.7 fm! (The show still runs regularly
weekly from 2-3 am Tuesday nights / Friday mornings 8)

* Thursday May 3rd: Ill-Esha and her krew will be laying the beats down at
Library Square as part of NewMusicWest! The library: not just a source of
cheap books and DVDs any longer!

* Friday May 4th: The ALF House will be playing host to a very special
Spartacus Books fundraiser. With a what and a where like that, more
information would simply be superfluous.

* Friday May 11th: Early poetry slam sensation and videopoet Alexandra
Oliver-Basekic launches her new book, Where the English Housewife Shines, at
the Forufera Centre (505 Hamilton Street) at 6 pm. Serial surrealist RC
Weslowski opens.

You've probably noticed that this is the first posting in years not to come
from the butchershop e-mail address, which has finally given up the ghost.
That may be the first step in spurring me to set this list up as an automated
process from which members can sign up and unsubscribe automatically... in the
meantime, you get to write in to me directly to make those adjustments. We bid
a fond farewell also to the Perpetual Motion Roadshow, exhausting the last of
its volunteers after some wild years on the highways and sofas of this great
continent. Thanks to everyone who performed and listened at their local tourstops!
