Here are many more photo links that people have posted in the comments of previous entries.

[Amusing to read the perspectives of car drivers. Some driver says that the environmentalism of CM makes sense but not the public space issues... 1... 2... 3... Yes Mr cooped up genius driver man, Public Space is the environment we share. There is a theoretical global environment that we can talk big about and there is a real local space, that gutter the cyclists get designated to ride in... Escape your cage and feel the world with your feet, you'll notice that cars are not a benign environmental presense in the concrete local world]
  • Photos and commentary from the guy that gives out the free recycled batteries!
  • Apparently there is even a Flickr Vancouver Critical Mass pool or group of photos! I think they will host your photos for free so take advantage, maybe we need a more permanent link there.

Record Breaking Ride Attracts 2400 +5 Wheels

Record Breaking Ride Attracts Over 1200

VANCOUVER -- June 25, 2005 -- History was made yesterday in Vancouver as cyclists took to the streets in the largest numbers yet.

In celebration of Bike Month, bicycle advocates called for 2000 + 5 wheels, and handily topped their target by pulling over 1200 people to the event as cyclists joined the rolling mass of bicycles, skate boarders, and in-line skaters.

"What's going on?" shouts one driver in a red Passat. A pamphlet volunteer swings over on his bike, handing off a handbill explaining the ride and how to "cork" -- a way of safely blocking car traffic from entering the mass of bicycles, boarders, and skaters.

Bike Month is coming to a close in Vancouver, and cyclists marked the bike-event-filled month in style. Starting 6 PM at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the celebratory ride spontaneously crossed the Granville and Burrard Street bridges, and snaked through the city, starting conversations. An important Burrard Street Bridge modification finally goes to Vancouver City Council on June 28.

"This is the best ride ever," stated a jubilant Steve Kisby, one of the many promoters of the ride. "Last year we had over 800 riders. With the forecast calling for rain, I thought we might just maintain our numbers. The increase is just amazing," he continued.

Cycling has been gaining momentum as an alternative to transit and operating a motor vehicle. As bicycles enter a new state of cool and shades of hot for the summer, the requisite elements seemed to come together to present the beginnings of an irrefutable "critical mass" in support of bicycle transportation.

"I met people from Melbourne, I met people from Portland, I met people from BC's Interior coming down for the ride," said Bev Canuel. "All these people are coming to Vancouver to enjoy this beautiful city and bicycling together. If they're coming from other places they need to stay somewhere and eat. That has to be good for tourism," Canuel continued.

The ride is part of a series of rides that occur the last Friday of every month, called Critical Mass, that winds through the streets of Vancouver encouraging motorists to abandon their cars for clean air. Critical Mass is a grassroots reclamation of public space which allows cyclists and other self-propelled people to move safely and comfortably through the streets of Vancouver in a car-free space. The motto: "We're Not Blocking Traffic -- We ARE Traffic!"

Critical Mass was born in San Francisco in 1992, and quickly spread to other cities worldwide. Now over 300 cities boast monthly rides. Attendance at Vancouver Critical Mass has been increasing steadily, with recent rides averaging 300 participants. The next ride is July 29.

God says: Ye Shall Mass Astride 2 Wheels

^^^Click on this image to link with
printable jpg flyer that has more
details of the church bike event.

Strange but true:
This Friday's Critical Mass is supported by none other than *Jesus* himself! Or, more accurately, a group of bicycle loving Anglicans and Lutherans - who like to ride Critical Mass - will combine their work with their play in order to "bless" the riders and their bicycles [or skates I assume]. If you want to take part be early at 5pm at Christ Church Cathedral, 690 Burrard St [only one block from Art Gallery CM meeting spot]. I've heard there will be 'holy' chain oil given out!

Today's ride will be a blast with very diverse groups of self propelled people all riding together from the Art Gallery leaving 6pm.

4 more posters for friday

I've made 4 more posters for the June 24 [friday] 2005 wheels critical mass. Velolove email is still down and will be until after the ride because we have to move servers so please tell people you know yourself, bring all your friend! Print these posters and plaster the city. We can do it! The last few days before the ride are the best time to invite people anyway so if people make a big effort this week we can really have 2000 wheels on friday! And it is supposed to be sunny and warm. And there is going to be new choppers and the mobile, pedal powered dance machine sound system, improved since last year.

More details about the ride for new massers in the older blog entries below, there are also 3 other amazing poster designs at the bottom of that entry by bev and david.

Print and Propagate! Feel free to modify,
YOU are the Critical Mass organiser:
these top 2 are meant to be
printed on 11x17 paper and
then cut in half lengthwise.
this is for 8.5x11 normal size paper
This is 8.5x11 cut into quarters

You need something like Adobe Acrobat to view and print which you can download free.

Like last year, it will probably be too big a crowd for everyone at the beginning of the ride to hear the announcements from a megaphone. So, I've re-done the 'CMrules' [there are no rules] flyer I made last year which explains the ride for new people. I made it into a PDF which you can print out into a quarter size sheet handbill. [Don't forget to photocopy doublesided reverse so both sides information is there] Of course, the announcements are open to everyone and xerocracy flyers also, so please make your own non-rules up, print, distribute. Here are the text files that I used: 1 and 2

June 24 is the 2000+5 Wheels Ride!

Hey Everybody,
[velolove list is still not working!]

It's only a few more days until the Gigantic 2000+5 Wheels Critical Mass Bike Ride. The Grande Finale Street Party Rolling Celebration end of June Bike Month. The idea is to have about 1000 riders [x2 wheels per bike] or 667 tricyclists or 250 rollerbladers... or any combination thereof. Here is a few pictures from last year.

As usual the details are:
Last Friday of the Month, June 24th 2005
Meet at Vancouver Art Gallery anytime after 5pm
Departure around 6pm
Riding around the city for fun, and our future
Everybody welcomed, FREE
Bring a bike, skate, wheelchair, rollercouch, trike, unicycle... jog if you are energetic. Dress up and bring bells, whistles, music systems - everything to make it more FUN

This is probably the least pre-organised/promoted Giant June Critical Mass so far. The idea started in 2003 and back then it was called the 1000 wheels ride because we were hoping for 500 riders/skaters to show up. Before then the biggest monthly Vancouver Critical Mass ride was about 2-300 people. We totally surpassed that amount that year and about 800 people showed up. Last year we called it the 2000+4 Wheels Ride hoping for 1002 in attendance. It rained last year, and people being people, we didn't quite have 1000 people riding but it sure was fun anyway with 800 people again - in the RAIN! [and technically we counted 2004 wheels because of all the many wheeled skateboards and rollerskates].

So this year, can we do it? Can we get 1000 riders. If the weather co-operates then for sure! If you tell all your friends that it is not to be missed and they tell their friends. There is less promotion this year but then it is starting to have some momentum of its own. Critical Mass is the theory and the name. Word of mouth is the surest method of communication their is - slow and steady - we bypass the corporate controlled media to tell other cyclists who share this city one-on-one! No one is in charge so we are all in charge, lets take care of each other and make this happen.

One day we won't have to organise special rides because Critical Mass will be everyday and cycling for transportation and fun will be safe and comfortable in our city. Imagine such sanity!?! The only traffic jam is a pleasant chance to talk to your neighbour. A world without everyone boxed it. A sky which is thanking us. We can do it, we are strong in one another. We don't block traffic, because we are traffic: Every year it is more and more true. 'Tis the waning of the age of automobiles and the dawning of the age of human powered FREEDOM in the most real sense of the word.

XOXO take care and take the lane,
vancouver bicycle tricksters

Please Post a Notice about the ride and be sure to show your friends:

Saturday, June 11

The World Naked Bike, the craziest and most fun'est of all the events on the planet earth will be happening June 11th. Naked and colour clad cyclists will be challenging conformity in cities across the World.
Amsterdam, Victoria, Vancouver, Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco, Paris, London, Spain, Montreal, Belgium and countless others will be streaking through news headlines and making life on this planet a lot more colourful.

The World Naked Bike ride is a protest against car culture. It's time to put a stop to the indecent exposure of people and the planet to cars and the pollution they create. According the United Nations close to a million species of plants and animals could disappear from the face of the earth in the next 50 years as a
result of green house gasses being released primarily from cars.

Unless we change direction we are likely to land up were we are heading.

The Vancouver ride starts 3 pm at Sunset Beach (Beach Avenue at Bute). The theme for Vancouver is masquerade.

After party at Open Studios, 252 East 1st Avenue in Vancouver (see below)

The World Naked Bike Ride is an international celebration of the power and individuality of our bodies as well as a protest against oil dependency. All cyclists, roller bladers, joggers and skate boarders are invited to attend. The dress code is bare as you dare. The decision as to how naked participants are is determined by ride participants.

Sunday, June 19

This year, the notorious EastVan Chopper Fest (4th Annual) is happening in conjunction with the Car-Free Commercial Drive Festival.

The Drive will be closed to car and bus traffic between First Ave and Venables for the entire afternoon... for a big community party in the street! PedalPlay is presenting the EastVan Chopper Fest as part of the event, with support from the Margaret Charles Chopper Collective.

http://www.pedalpower.org and http://www.mcthree.ca

If you haven't been to an EastVan Chopper Fest before, chopper riders from Vancouver and beyond bring their bikes out for people to ride. Watch spectators get drawn into the action, wobbling and laughing their way down the street on wonky and stylish wheels. Kids and people of all ages love this event! Also featured is the PedalPowered Sound system and PedalPowered fresh fruit smoothies.

We are looking for about 2 dozen volunteers who want to be involved. Volunteers need to agree to one two-hour shift, sometime between noon and 6 pm on June 19th. Volunteer jobs are, greeting people, helping with bikes and bike maintenance, making fresh fruit pedal-powered smoothies, encouraging people to ride the bikes which power the sound system.

Volunteer rewards (aside from being involved in this showcase of positive bike culture):
Cheap pedalpower T-shirts (black with option of sleeveless), yummy smoothies on June 19th, and an after party for festival organizers and volunteers.

To volunteer, please contact RedSara at redsara@redsara.ca
