Kitsilano Tanker Town Hall Meeting
Tuesday, July 24

If there was an oil spill, what would be the impact on Kits Beach?

Kits Beach and Stanley Park are part of the jewels of Vancouver, and
one of the largest, most ecologically diverse urban parks on the
planet. The area has already been heavily impacted by increased
industrial and shipping activity, but an oil spill in Burrard Inlet or
the southern Georgia Strait would absolutely devastate the park and
its marine ecosystem.

Join the Wilderness Committee, Tanker Free BC, and the Point Grey
Preservation Society on Tuesday, July 24, for a town hall meeting
about the potential impacts of an oil spill on Stanley Park and Kits
Beach, and learn more about the unique ecosystems and species that the
park currently sustains.

7:30pm at the St. James Community Centre, 3214 West 10th Ave

At the event, you'll be able to view a brand new report on the
consequences of oil tanker traffic on Burrard Inlet, co-written by Rex
Weyler and Mary Kelly.

Candle-lit Vigil to Remember Enbridge Oil Spill
Tuesday, July 24

Join a candle-lit vigil to mark the anniversary of Enbridge's
devastating Kalamazoo river oil spill and help protect BC watersheds
from a similar fate.

In July 2010, an Enbridge pipeline ruptured, spilling more than 3
million litres of Tar Sands oil into Michigan's Kalamazoo River. The
spill devastated the river, which remained closed more than a year
after the spill. ForestEthics Advocacy will be installing modified
versions of the "River Closed" signs from Kalamazoo along BC rivers to
highlight the devastation we can expect if Enbridge's proposed
Northern Gateway pipeline or Kinder Morgan's new TransMountain
pipeline are built.

We encourage you to wear dark clothes. Candles will be provided.

The vigil is planned to follow the Kitsilano Tankers Town Hall Meeting
(see above). We'll be riding our bikes and carpooling from the Town
Hall meeting venue to the River, leaving at 9:30pm.

If you can provide a ride or rids to the vigil, please email twalper@hotmail.com

eatART: Power the VAG
Saturday, July 28

eatART cordially invites you to the 4th annual eatART: Power the VAG,
an annual energy awareness art party that takes place in front of the
Vancouver Art Gallery and includes a pedal powered sound system and an
unforgettable outdoor dance party!

11:00am until 5:00pm

The event will showcase eatART's giant zero emissions kinetic sculptures.

Pedal power will be generated by teams of "watt-riders" who will power
the event by pedalling with their back wheels resting on a spinning
mini generator that is connected to the sound system. The riders will
collect "energy pledges" that coincide with the amount of "watts
raised," with all proceeds going to the eatART Foundation. In tandem
with this pedal-powered energy source, an array of solar panels will
be powering the tents and info booth.

2nd Velo Family Ride: Mini Cycle Style and Seawall Ride
Sunday, July 29

As promised, Velo Family Diaries will be hosting another family ride
to get our younger bike riders out on their bikes! This time around
we'll take a ride along the seawall, with a special theme of showing
the kids dressed stylishly. Whether they ride on their own, on a
trail-a-bike, carrier, trailer, etc., we want to get some photos to
share on the blog that show even kids can look stylish on two wheels.

TIME: 1:30pm meet up, we ride at 2:00pm
START: plaza between Canada Place and the Convention Centre by
Waterfront Station
END: Second Beach Playground and Beach

Note that dressing stylishly while riding is completely up to the
rider. If that means riding in a dress, or... just a pair of pants and
a t-shirt, the idea is to show that you can ride in anything, so let
your young ones be creative!

This event is open to everyone, even if you don't have kids, so pass
along the details. The more the merrier!

summer to send message to our governments that we want transit
transportation solutions, not a trucking Freeway nor a 6 lane Patullo

alone will create health problems in our community.

PEDAL (Pedal Energy Development Alternatives) is opening up recycling
and bringing some inspiration, the second Monday of every month.

This is an artsy evening at the PEDAL Depot: bring your ideas and

pieces.

7:00pm to 9:00pm
The Bike Depot, 1830 Ontario St (at 2nd Avenue)

Shop time/tool use will be by donation! Of course we'd like to make
