NY Rookie cop in hot water after video shows him slamming biker

A rookie NYPD cop was stripped of his badge and gun Monday after a stunning video caught him slamming a bicyclist to the ground in an apparent unprovoked attack.

Officer Patrick Pogan, 22, of the Midtown South Precinct, was bounced to desk duty soon after the video of Friday's incident in Times Square appeared on YouTube.

"The video is bad - what can you say?" a police source said. The damning video not only revealed an out-of-the-blue attack but also seems to show Pogan lied about the incident in court papers.

What a contrast with Vancouver. The relationship between the police and CM here may not be perfect, but the difference between felonious assault and a police escort is profound to say the least.

Advocates of CM need to try and understand the other side. You hold up traffic at peak times; some of us motorists may be in a legitimate need to get some place. My daughter needed to be admitted to the hospital but we were stuck in a stand still a few months ago, due to CM. With two children under the age of 2 it's not realistic for us to be without a car, though we try to walk with a stroller or take public transit whenever we can. CM, in my opinion, goes too far. One of these days someone in Vancouver is going to get seriously hurt. As for the video, one could argue that the cop is simply trying to get to the sidewalk and took (overly aggressive) defensive measures to protect himself.

Sorry Steve: It is an obvious move to check the Rider.
If you check the news report: The Rookie Officer actually lied about the incident to try and down-play it; and place the blame on the Rider.
The Rider does "lean-in" slightly toward the Officer; but that is a natural reaction as far as I am concerned.
I understand your feelings on the CM blocking traffic; but it is the nature of the beast (so to speak).
The CM is a velvet hammer.
People (the worst ones) can rant all they want; but until they wake-up: SOMEBODY has to keep awareness of Cycling, in their faces...
This city has a LONG way to go to become a good place to bike-commute: Infrastructure is one thing. Driver awareness is another...

It is not realistic to be taking children in a car. I know, I have a son. In the short term it may be easier but it is the wrong choice (and puts the child at extreme risk as well, most children die in car "accident") Finally, if we all keep resigning ourselves to the idea that driving is legitimate then when will it ever end? We need to take personal responsibility. It's true that it's hard to buck the trend but we must. Also - how is driving downtown to a hospital a sensible choice in the first place. You are much more likely to get held up in traffic than by CM. You should maybe park and walk. Walking in the city is often FASTER than driving!

Sorry to be so brutal but your (probably not real) situational rationalisation of violence needs to be contradicted. Of course it would be better to cooperate and not antagonise people. That is why we need cars off the road and at least a bare few carfree routes so that one can get somewhere without the constant harrasment of motor vehicles.
